Tree Trunk Protectors

Off road recovery equipment that provides safety and performance is important when you are using your 4X4. Many times, trees are used as anchor points in recovery off road situations. A tree trunk protector is designed to ensure that the tree which you are using to secure your wench cable or rope is not damaged. When a complete strip of bark is removed from a tree, it is called ring barking. It can eventually kill the tree. Tree trunk protectors not only shield a tree from harm, but also will also prevent damage to your winch cable.

Wrapping a winch cable directly around a tree trunk will damage the winch cable and the tree both. A choker chain or wire rope will cause irreparable damage to a tree. Tree trunk protectors are straps that fit or go around the tree. These recovery straps are heavy duty and rugged. They can also be used as a bridle straps and load equalizing straps in certain situations. A tree trunk protector works with every winch recovery kit, with winch fitted wire cable, or synthetic rope. These protectors are low stretch polyester, woven and fabricated to quality specifications.

All 4×4’s should include tree saver straps as a necessary piece of recovery equipment. For the best results, tree trunk protectors should be wrapped around the base of any live tree. It is also a possible option to use your tree trunk protector in conjunction with a clevis/D-shackle to secure a winch wire rope to any anchor object. Many straps have encased red warning marker to indicate damaged webbing. Trunk protectors have heavy-duty applications. Look for 8 ft. double-ply straps for extreme duty. Standard 6 ft. single-ply straps are often too short and too weak in off-road situations.

Tree trunk protectors come in a variety of sizes, brands, and colours. Make sure your protector is of a different colour than your snatch and extension strap. This will make it easier to differentiate it at a glance when you are using it. Some are available in durable mildew proof nylon. Nylon absorbs the shock of a pull better than polyester and has more elastic properties. Chafing is often an issue when a trunk protector has been used heavily for long periods of time. Movable sleeves on the main section of the protector help, along with end loops that have been reinforced with cordura. This allows the protector to endure harsh wear.
