Diff LocksOne of the most important features that any vehicle must have is driveability. For your safety, you want to make sure that your vehicle has great traction. For your driving enjoyment, you want your vehicle to handle well and respond quickly. When you’re driving a 4x4, the issue of driveability is even more important. When you’re off-roading in your 4x4, it can become a matter of life and death. You want to be sure that your vehicle is optimised to handle rough and often unpredictable terrain. One of the best ways to ensure this is to invest in diff locks for your 4x4.Diff locks work to change your standard automotive differential. In a standard vehicle, the two wheels on an axle can rotate at different speeds, depending on the traction that each individual wheel has. The main benefit of this standard differential is that it can prevent tyre scuffing and extend the life of your tyres. For most people, and for standard vehicle use, this is desired because it allows you to save money. But if you’re off-roading, you care more about your own life than the life of your tyres. You need to make sure that your wheels work together to keep you out of trouble.

Getting stranded or stuck is a common pitfall of off-roading. If you regularly try to navigate difficult terrain or uncharted areas, you’re bound to get stuck every once in a while. If you get stuck in a really remote area, that’s when you might be in some serious trouble. In a remote area, no one can come to your aid, and you could be stuck out there for a long time. Diff locks can help to prevent you from getting stuck because they lock the two wheels on the axle together, causing them to spin at the same speed.

The reason that a standard differential can’t help you when you’re stuck is that, even if one tyre has decent traction, having one tyre with traction isn’t enough to move you. The other wheels will continue spinning aimlessly. But if you lock the differential, you get better traction because of the equal rotational speed. This could be all it takes to keep you from getting stuck. 4x4s require three separate diff locks: one on the front axle, one on the rear axle, and a central lock in between the first two. When you get yours, be sure to get enough.
